The Council
The Council is a registered Charity SC 017034 managed by an Executive
Committee whose members are volunteers drawn from both the public
and private sectors. The Committee is supported by experienced part-time
salaried staff. The organisation is financially self-supporting
with income arising mainly from course fees.
Planning
Your Future
Given the changing lifestyles of today, planning for the future
some 10-15 years beforehand becomes important, in order to allow
individuals the opportunity to make the necessary adjustments to
their way of living well in advance.
Retirement Planning
Retirement no longer conjures up images of the old, the infirm and
the beginning of the end! Yet planning for it is either not regarded
as necessary or is put off till the last minute. More than ever
before, employees find early retirement offered or forced upon them
and have to face an uncertain future for which they are unprepared.
Even those retiring in their sixties can find themselves at a loss
when faced with life without work.
The Council believes that retirees have much to offer. The aim
of the Council is to raise awareness amongst people in Tayside and
the surrounding area of the benefit in retirement of sound physical,
social and financial health supported by a healthy lifestyle.
The idea that men and women could benefit from advice as they approached
retirement began in the USA in the 1940s, but it was 1949 before
the Committee on Education for the Aged was established in the UK.
The first identifiable pre-retirement course in Scotland began in
Glasgow in 1955 and the Pre-Retirement Association of Great Britain
and Northern Ireland was established in 1964. The Dundee and District
Pre-Retirement Council was inaugurated in 1981 and joined the National
Group of The Scottish Pre-Retirement Council when it was formed
in 1984. In 2005 the Council was renamed Tayside Pre-Retirement
Council.
Patrons
Employers may contribute directly to the work of the Council by
paying an annual Patrons fee. In recognition of the value of such
support Patrons are eligible for a 10% reduction in all course fees
and are entitled to be represented on the Council.
Remember... Expert advice is available locally
— do make use of it and don't wait too long.
